Logical deduction could be for communication purposes, since Snowtrooper Commanders are the main Blizzard Force liaison between the Snowtrooper ground troops and the AT-ATs. Perhaps that "nipple" facilitates smooth transmission in event of a bad blizzard conditions in Snow planets like Hoth and Rhen Var?

It's pretty much been established that the commander was the initial concept armor for the snows or at least incorporated concept parts. It's the only costume that has a definite picture of the bump and we have proof that at least one regular snow (the WSMI trooper) doesn't have the bump. My guess is at some point during the forming process the bump either broke off, was removed, or a different dome mold was used. At the very least I think the bump is less pronounced on the regular TS's. I guess we've finally cleared up the bump/no bump accuracy question. :) I still want a clear shot of a regular TS with the bump. I've got to go back though my refrence shots again now, you guys have got me inquisitive. :P

Good shot, before I thought it was just a shadow off the bump but now my guess is they painted it the same dark grey color as the details on the chest. On another note, is it just me or is that trooper missing his T-piece and a boot strap?

What I like about this photo is that all of the troopers are holding their buckets so tghey can see where they are going...LOL...BUT IF you notice....with the trooper on the far right (perfect side on detail ).....you can see just how big the section is UNDER the cowl..... as you caqn see ...it extends out well past the eye piece.....Hmmmm....armorers....we have a project....that may assist in getting a better looking bucket at the front....

It was posted on the main forum that this was actually "a Rivet", that was used to hold the hard hat liner in place. This is probably an early picture...before the rivet was removed...if it was removed...please go on over woth this link and take a look....

Even better! I seem to remember a shot of the inside of the bucket someone took to show the chinstrap while setting up the manikin. Does anyone have a link to that shot and does it show the liner at all?

If its the photo I am thinking of, then it was just a low angle photo... and you could see the chinstrap....not an interior photo....I wish someone would prove me wrong though...

I suppose that you are referring to this picture of the Snowtrooper Commander clay sculpting (source : STAR WARS Behind The Magic CD-ROM)

Can't see any "nipple" from here, but a good shot of the 2 verticle lines on the nose area. Not sure what those 2 discs on the cheeks are... :?
